In coastal systems, the multiplicity of sources fueling the pool of particulate organic matter (POM) leads to divergent estimations of POM composition. Eleven systems (two littoral systems, eight embayments and semi-enclosed systems and one estuary) distributed along the three maritime façades of France were studied for two to eight years in order to quantify the relative contribution of organic matter sources to the surface-water POM pool in coastal systems. This study was based on carbon and nitrogen elemental and isotopic ratios, used for running mixing models. The POM of the estuary is dominated by terrestrial material (93% on average), whereas the POM of the other systems is dominated by phytoplankton (84% on average). Nevertheless, for the latter...

Dynamics of particulate organic matter composition in coastal systems: forcing of spatio-temporal variability at multi-systems scale ArchiMer

In costal systems, particulate organic matter (POM) results from a multiplicity of sources having their respective dynamics in terms of production, decomposition, transport and burial. The POM pool experiences thus considerable spatial and temporal variability. In order to better understand this variability, the present study employs statistical multivariate analyses to investigate links between POM composition and environmental forcings for a panel of twelve coastal systems distributed along the three maritime regions of France and monitored weekly to monthly for 1 to 8 years. At multi-system scale, two main gradients of POC composition have been identified: a ‘Continent-Ocean’ gradient associated with hydrodynamics, sedimentary dynamics and depth of the...

Large and local-scale influences on physical and chemical characteristics of coastal waters of Western Europe during winter ArchiMer
Treguer, Paul; Goberville, Eric; Barrier, Nicolas; L'Helguen, Stephane; Morin, Pascal; Bozec, Yann; Rimmelin-maury, Peggy; Czamanski, Marie; Grossteffan, Emilie; Cariou, Thierry; Repecaud, Michel; Quemener, Loic.
There is now a strong scientific consensus that coastal marine systems of Western Europe are highly sensitive to the combined effects of natural climate variability and anthropogenic climate change. However, it still remains challenging to assess the spatial and temporal scales at which climate influence operates. While large-scale hydro-climatic indices, such as the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) or the East Atlantic Pattern (EAP) and the weather regimes such as the Atlantic Ridge (AR), are known to be relevant predictors of physical processes, changes in coastal waters can also be related to local hydro-meteorological and geochemical forcing. Here, we study the temporal variability of physical and chemical characteristics of coastal waters located at...

Marine biodiversity in French Guiana: Estuarine, coastal, and shelf ecosystems under de influence of Amazonian waters Gayana
Artigas,Luis Felipe; Vendeville,Philippe; Leopold,Marc; Guiral,Daniel; Ternon,Jean-François.
Marine biodiversity in French Guiana is strongly influenced by the amagon River waters of the river Amazon, which constitute a major structuring factor for the estuarine, coastal, and shelf marine ecosystems. Moreover, the marked seasonal and interannual variabilities play important roles in the stability or fluctuations in the environmental parameters that influence biodiversity at the ecological, population, and genetic levels. Previous and ongoing studies of the marine and littoral biota relate mostly to commercial marine species, protected species in danger of extinction and, specially, to the biodiversity and functioning of local coastal and littoral ecosystems such as estuaries, mudflats, sandy beaches and, particularly, littoral mangroves. Report of the workshop on shellfish bivalve cultivation, growth, modelling and impact on the ecosystem ArchiMer
Heral, Maurice; Bayne, B..
The Workshop was held in Plymouth (6-10 October 1996) in the Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht club organised by the Plymouth Marine Laboratory under the joint charmanships of B. Bayne et M. Héral. 36 scientists were participated to this meeting from 11 countries, 8 belonging to ICES (Annex 1) 30 communications have been presented. This meeting was supported by an European Union contrat from DG14 with a concerted action AIR3 CT 942219 on Trophic capacity of coastal zone of oysters, mussels and cockles cultivation. This contract has paid the travel cost of all the participants.
